Advanced PLC Control for Switch Heating at ProRail

By: Ing. R. Kross
Railway switch with heating system in winter

RJ Kross has designed and implemented a new, PLC-controlled switch heating system for critical railway junctions of ProRail. This technology is essential for guaranteeing operational continuity during severe winter conditions.

Proactive Freezing Prevention

The system continuously monitors temperature and humidity directly on the rails. Using advanced sensors and a programmable logic controller (PLC), it anticipates ice formation before it reaches a critical stage.

The heating elements are automatically activated based on real-time data, not on a fixed schedule. This leads to a significant reduction in energy consumption and maintenance interventions compared to traditional systems.

Core System Specifications

  • Integration with existing ProRail infrastructure
  • Self-learning algorithm for on-site weather prediction
  • Remote monitoring and diagnostics via secure connection
  • Modular design for easy expansion to other junctions

"The reliability of railway junctions in winter is a fundamental safety requirement. Our PLC-controlled solution ensures that switches remain free of ice, without wasting energy."

— Ing. R. Kross, founder RJ Kross

Implementation at the first pilot junction has been successfully completed. The next phase includes rollout to additional critical locations in the Dutch rail network, in close collaboration with ProRail's technical teams.
